Mohit, McCullum shine as CSK ROCKS n MI SUCKS

Result: Chennai Super Kings beat Mumbai Indians by seven wickets.
Toss: Mumbai Indians won the toss and chose to bat first. Mumbai 141-7 in 20
overs: Mohit Sharma produced a fine death bowling display and picked up four wickets to help CSK restrict Mumbai Indians to a modest total despite a brisk start provided by Aditya Tare (23, 19b, 4x4) and Corey Anderson (39, 31b, 3x4, 1x6). Mumbai's innings mainly revolved around captain Rohit Sharma (50, 41b, 3x4, 2x6) and Anderson but the lower middle order couldn't build on a solid base and 84-run third wicket partnership between the duo. Mohit finished with figures of 4/14. BCCI The rest of the batting lineup managed just 27 runs, which included Kieron Pollard's innings which added 12 runs to the board for Mumbai. Earlier, Michael Hussey's poor form in the tournament continued as he was bowled by fellow Australian Hilfenhaus in the second over. But Rohit didn't follow suit — after failing in the first two matches, he finally came to his fore and together with Anderson played sensibly to lay the platform for the score. He started cautiously before opening up but he departed just after reaching his fifty, caught by Dwayne Smith off Hilfenhaus in the 18th over. Proceedings really slowed down after R Ashwin's direct hit meant Anderson had to walk before Mohit Sharma picked up three wickets - Ambati Raydu, Pollard and Harbhajan Singh in the 19th over  to prevent a late burst from the Mumbai batsmen. Apart from Mohit (4/14), Ben Hilfenhaus (2/39) picked up two wickets for the Chennai outfit. CSK 142-3 in 19 overs: Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum gave an explosive start to CSK, stitching up a 57-run partnership in just 6.2 overs before two quick wickets put a halt on what could have been a runaway victory. Smith was the first to go for 29, taken after Anderson made up 40-odd yards to complete a brilliant catch off Pragyan Ojha's bowling. Smith was incredibly dealing only in sixes — he hit four of them in his short stay. Suresh Raina (1) and Faf du Plessis (20 off 25, no boundaries) uncharacteristically lost their wickets — Raina was undone by a quickish wide delivery and Du Plessis by a doosra by Harbhajan — both were stumped. McCullum on the other hand looked like he was enjoying facing his countryman Anderson and hit him for three fours in the sixth over on his way to a match-winning knock of 71 from 53 balls (8x4, 2x6). As wickets fell around him, McCullum didn't lose cool and paced his innings perfectly despite Mumbai's bowlers having their tails up and gaining confidence. But the sight of Dhoni coming in to bat must have drained that confidence — if there is one finisher you want who can guarantee a calm end then it's the Indian skipper. He added quickfire 14 (11 balls, 1x4, 1x6) in a 28-run partnership with McCullum that saw CSK comfortable past the finish line. Turning point: Ashwin's direct hit which dismissed Anderson — Mumbai's simply collapsed after that wicket.
Man of the match: Mohit Sharma with that incredible 4/14. Excellent bowling at the death.

SACHIN AND GANGULY foray into football, win ISL bids

MUMBAI: Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly were among the host of high-profile winning bidders as the organisers of the much-anticipated Indian Super League on Sunday unveiled the eight franchises for the event that is set to take Indian football by storm.

The bid winners for the eight franchises of the league, which is scheduled to be held in September-November, was announced by organisers IMG-Reliance after evaluation of the bids by a seven-member panel.

Tendulkar bagged the Kochi franchise along with PVP Ventures, which also owns a team in the Indian Badminton League while Ganguly, who bid by forming a consortium with Spanish League giants Atletico Madrid and businessmen Harshavardhan Neotia, Sanjeev Goenka and Utsav Parekh, won the Kolkata franchise.

The Mumbai franchise went to Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor and Bimal Parekh while another tinsel town biggie Salman Khan bagged the Pune franchise together with Kapil Wadhawan and Dheeraj Wadhawan of the Wadhawan Group.

Another actor John Abraham teamed up with I-League side from the northeast, Shillong Lajong, to bag the franchise to be based in Guwahati.

The remaining three teams went to Sameer Manchanda-led Den Network for Delhi, Sun Group, the owners of IPL team Hyderabad Sunrisers, for Bengaluru and the consortium of Venugopal Dhoot of Videocon, Dattaraj Salgaocar and Shrinivas V Dempo for Goa.

Organised by IMG-Reliance in association with Star India, the league has the backing of AIFF, and is set to see big names as icon players such as former France international Robert Pires and ex-Sweden and Arsenal player Fredrik Ljungberg.

Sources said that the organisers received positive response from more than 30 interested parties to its 'Invitation To Bid' tender notice, which closed on March 27.

It is learnt that around 18 to 20 bidders had put in their money on ISL either through forming a consortium or individually. This is for the first time that a franchise property in sports in India has elicit such a response from the business as well as sports and Bollywood community.

International advisory firm, Ernst & Young, had the mandate of drawing up and validating the bid process. Each bidder was subject to strict eligibility norms and was required to submit the bids, as prescribed under the 'Invitation to Bid' document.

The bids were evaluated by the jury panel in the presence of Ernst & Young representatives, the organisers said.

"IMG Reliance and Star India promoted Indian Super League, under the aegis of AIFF, have today reached a crucial junction on its path to rediscover Indian football, as it identifies and awards eight 'League Partners' across the country ahead of the proposed September-November 2014 inaugural season," the IMG-Reliance said.

"Termed as an unrivalled footballing event, the Indian Super League being planned under the Football Sports Development Pvt Ltd. aims to ignite a revolution in the sport and ultimately enable Indian football to thrive and perform at the highest level on the international stage.

"Indian Super League's proposal for 'League Partners' received an overwhelming response from the Business, Sports and Bollywood community, to own a team from the nine proposed cities in the contention," the organisers said.

IMG-Reliance said the ISL will help in taking football to other non-traditional centres, which will only help in raising the profile of the game in the country.

"Four of the final eight cities -- Delhi, Kochi, Guwahati and Bangalore -- will find itself in the mainstream football map of the country, which is traditionally being dominated by Kolkata, Goa, Pune and Mumbai, through the high-profile professional Indian Super League," it said.

Tendulkar, who retired last year from international cricket after 24-year-long illustrious career, will be associated with the team as its brand ambassador, the release said.

PVP Ventures, headed by Prasad V Potluri, is one of the largest investors of the country in media and entertainment industry and is listed on the BSE and the NSE. PVP was one of the bidders for Hyderabad team of IPL in 2012.

Ganguly, also an ardent football fan, has tied up with four entities to get Kolkata, one of the most sought-after franchises.

Atletico de Madrid is the third most supported club in Spain. They are now on the top of La Liga standings and also through to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League while Harshavardhan Neotia is the head of Ambuja Neotia Group, a Kolkata-based real estate company and recent forays into hospitality, healthcare and education.

Sanjiv Goenka of RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group has interest in Power business and network of modern retail chains across the country. Utsav Parekh has been Non-Executive-Non-Independent Chairman at SMIFS Capital Markets Ltd.

A keen follower of football and an avid fan of FC Barcelona, actor Ranbir bagged the Mumbai franchise along with Bimal Parekh, a well-known chartered accountant. Ranbir has been often seen on the maidens of Mumbai playing football with his co-stars and friends when he is not shooting.

Another actor Salman Khan is also known for his interest in football. He has often been seen in football stadiums, including during India's Nehru Cup campaign in New Delhi a few years ago. He was on the verge of being roped in as the Brand Ambassador of Indian football by the AIFF a few years back though it was dropped later on.

Media conglomerate Sun Group, which won the Bengaluru franchise, is not new in sports business as it also owns IPL cricket team Sunrisers Hyderabad.

For the football fans in the capital city of Delhi, it's a welcome news as Den Networks Limited, a cable TV distribution company, bagged the franchise while Goa has been bagged by the owner of I-League side Dempo and Dattaraj Salgaocar, who owns a mining company, along with electronics major Videocon.

Meanwhile, football-mad northeast India is also set to get a taste of high-profile football with actor John Abraham tying up with Shillong Lajong, the region's first I-League side. John is an avid follower of football and sports in general. He has also bought a stake in the Delhi Waveriders team of Hockey India League.

IMG-Reliance had entered into a multi-million dollar deal with Star India to become equity partners in a joint venture for the next 10 years to run the league. Star India, in which media baron Rupert Murdoch has a majority stake, has acquired broadcast and sponsorship rights for the league.

Nine cities were identified as franchises up for bidding and Chennai lost out.

The league, which was to be held last year but deferred for later this year, will feature 22 players in each team, with 10 foreign players, including a marquee player. Each franchise will also include eight domestic players and four local players from the catchment area in the under-23 category.

IMG-Reliance, the commercial and marketing partner of the AIFF, has already signed 39 domestic players and 20 players of AIFF developmental side Pailan Arrows.

PM MANMOHAN SINGH ismisses Baru’s claims, "baseless and mischievous’"

New Delhi: The Prime Minister's Office today rubbished as "baseless and mischievous" the contention of former media adviser to PM Sanjaya Baru that PMO files were seen by Congress president Sonia Gandhi. "The statement being attributed to a former media adviser to the prime minister that PMO files were seen by the Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi is completely baseless and mischievous. It is categorically denied that any PMO file has ever been shown to Smt. Sonia Gandhi," PMO spokesman Pankaj Pachauri said in a statement in New Delhi. Former media adviser Sanjaya Baru. Image courtesy CNN-IBN He was responding to the claims by Baru in his book Accidental Prime Minister – The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh and comments to media that the prime minister's principal secretary Pulok Chatterjee would seek "instructions" from Gandhi on important PMO decisions. Criticising Baru, the PMO statement said, "The book written by the former media adviser is an attempt to misuse a privileged position and access to high office to gain credibility and to apparently exploit it for commercial gain." Pachauri said, "The commentary smacks of fiction and coloured views of a former adviser." The statement reiterated that "the question about comments of the former media adviser was raised by senior editors when they met the Prime Minister in October last year. His answer was - "Do not believe all he is saying". The PMO statement came as opposition launched a scathing attack on Gandhi and the prime minister, citing the claims by Baru. In his book, Baru has written, "Pulok, who was inducted into the Manmohan Singh PMO at the behest of Sonia Gandhi, had regular, almost daily, meetings with Sonia at which he was said to brief her on the key policy issues of the day and seek her instructions on important files to be cleared by the PM. "Indeed, Pulok was the single most point of regular contact between PM and Sonia. He was also the PMO's main point of contact with the NAC, a high profile advisory body chaired by Sonia Gandhi, with social activists as members. It was sometimes dubbed the shadow cabinet." As the observations created a flutter, Baru said, "it was not a secret." He said it was well known that Chatterjee was Sonia Gandhi's secretary when she was the leader of opposition and had also worked with the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation chaired by her. "He was very much part of the family.... I was not witness to it, whether she physically saw the files. I knew she was consulted on issues and he was taking her concurrence," said Baru, who had resigned from the PMO in 2008 while Chatterjee joined it in 2011.

INDIAN POLITICS 2014 : POLLING DATES AND LEADER OF THE STATE

BJP : Superstar Rajinikanth JOINS HAND WITH MODI

Chennai: BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi today met Tamil superstar Rajinikanth at his residence in Chennai, setting off speculation, but the actor termed it as a courtesy call and said no political significance should be attached to it. Rajinikanth said he was a "well-wisher" of Modi and wished him "all the best" while the BJP leader described the superstar as a "good friend". BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi (L) and Tamil superstar Rajinikanth. Image courtesy Narendra Modi's Twitter handle "This is not a political meeting. When Modiji visited me when I was hospitalised, I had invited him to have a cup of tea with me whenever he came to Chennai. So he has come now," Rajinikanth told reporters outside his Poes Garden residence. Answering questions by media persons in the company of Modi, Rajinikant, dressed in starched white shirt and dhoti, said, "I am happy he is here." Shaking hands and then hugging each other in front of the huge gathering of his fans, who had thronged his residence to get a glimpse of their superstar, Rajinikanth said, "He is my well-wisher and I'm his well-wisher." Modi's meeting with Rajinikanth ahead of 24 April Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu where BJP has stitched an alliance of six parties fuelled speculation that the saffron party leader was likely to seek the superstar's support. Rajinikanth has been maintaining steadfastly his apolitical stand. However, the actor, who has a vast fan following, wished Modi "All the best!" Quickly responding, Modi, dressed in a saffron shirt and dhoti, said, "I wished him on the eve of Tamil New Year. He is a good friend." Modi, who arrived at the airport, drove straight to Rajinikanth's residence where the meeting lasted briefly and pleasantries were exchanged. The BJP, which has been making all out efforts to lay its footprint in Tamil Nadu for the first time, has been desperately looking for support of Rajinikanth to brighten its poll prospects. Rajinikanth, who enjoys a cult status, has been maintaining a safe distance from political parties, despite being lured by political outfits. Modi, who was in Chennai to attend AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa's swearing-in as chief minister on 16 May 2011, had also visited a private hospital where Rajinikanth was undergoing treatment for respiratory problems and wished him speedy recovery. It was during that meeting Rajinikanth had invited Modi to his residence. PTI
